Endurance of Time

Media: Pencil on rough surface paper

Size: 16.5" H x 11.7" L

Four hands are reaching desperately to grasp a balloon picturing a child’s laughing face. The juxtaposition of the adult hands and joyful children’s faces captures the dichotomy between the purity of the children and the complicated nature of aging and maturation. The detailed realism within the piece emphasizes the nature of humankind--the growing desire to be young as people grow older.

Behind the Bamboo

Medium: drypoint

Size: 7.8 H x 5.5 L inches

A tiger quietly walks across a bamboo field as it fiercely gazes at the audience. This subject matter is associated with my Korean culture and identity. Though tigers are both feared and respected amongst Koreans, it is undoubtedly true that tigers constitute a significant role in the myth of Dangun, which portrays the introduction of Korea. Hence, this piece reinforces tigers' constant presence and reverence as mythical and holy creatures in my culture. This is also my first drypoint print attempt, where I explored different etching techniques to illustrate the textures of fur and firm bamboo leaves.

Light in The Midst of Chaos

Media: Mixed Media (pencil, digital paint)

Size: 16.5" H x 11.7" L

A girl glares at a light bulb emitting rays of colors. At first sight, her face appears expressionless, yet indescribably energetic as she looks into the light bulb. Behind the light bulb is chaos—broken and desecrated walls. This self-portrait explores my identity crises as a multicultural student. Having lived in five countries, I often find my concoction of cultures ambiguous. This piece conveys my process of embracing this uniqueness and finding the true colors of my identity. I used charcoal to create the portrait and background and inserted the colors digitally.

Remeniscence

Size: 16.5" H x 11.7" L

Media: Scratchboard

A bustling street sells Christmas cards and souvenirs. The piece captures my living memory of Korea and my reminiscent conversations with my mom. There is a repetition of sharp, etched bricks on the building with clean lines. They reinforce “my primary memories of Korea, which are characterized by complexity, the sharp-bricked buildings, and the endless stores that fill up the streets.” My chosen medium, scratchboard, is a monochrome sketch that reduces the scene to its simplest form, allowing the emphasis on the physical elements within the streets of Korea. Upon examining the pedestrians, one can notice their white shadows. The juxtaposition of the black and white reinforces the fluidity of time and their presence; though the people are not physically there anymore, the memories and footprints they left behind will continue to endure.

Miscellaneous Items

Size: 16.5" H x 11.7" L

Media: Pencil on rough paper

Situated on a table counter are miscellaneous items—an apple, a brick, a blanket, and a plant. This still-life drawing shows my exploration of building three-dimensional forms on a flat surface. I attempted the chiaroscuro effect by employing different shading techniques, including cross-hatching and making directional strokes. Though many of my works utilize a soft blending technique, this work strays away from blending and instead highlights the layers of pencil strokes to create depth and perspective.
