Self Portrait Under Light

Media: Oil paint on canvas Size: 74.8" H x 55.1" W x 0.8" D inches The sharp streak of paint across my face and the reflection of light reverberating through my eyes represent a feeling of desire. The scale of my face compared to the nearly pitch-black background directs attention to my mixed facial expression--a combination of power and willingness. The use of light in photographs done by contemporary photographer Brandon Woelfel influenced the light bulbs' composition.

A chain tightly wrapped around the Bible becomes loose once it gets unlocked. The Bible stops melting, and a plethora of colors come out in the midst of darkness. This piece was made after being inspired by how Martin Luther sought to place the Bible into the hands of ordinary Catholics and Christians. Winner of the Germany Hessen Art Competition (Der Hessische Minister Für Wissenschaft und Kunst)

"A fish can not be aware of the ocean before jumping up and out of the water." - Roxa White

Two women stare at each other in the foreground, and eerie fish swim above the horizon bordering the ocean and the moonlight sky. I intended to explore the truth beneath what is visible to humans and our subconsciousness. Like the aforementioned quote, this piece illustrates how humans often forget about the world surrounding them because they are confined in their innermost thoughts. "Lantern Bearers" by Maxfield Parrish was a major inspiration for the moon and composition of the fish. The one-point perspective in Utagawa Hiroshige's "Night view of Saruwaka-machi" inspired the angle of the road above the water.

Gaze

Media: Acrylic paint on canvas

Size: 8-1/4 x 11-3/4 inches

This painting is an observational portrait I did of my friend. I attempted to juxtapose the background and the face with the vibrant colors.
